A definate advantage of being a college student is the opportunity to see exhibits and presentations from famous professionals, businesses, and entities from all over the world. Southern Miss is no exception to the rule, bringing exhibits, seminars, and presentations to campus from all directions. Earlier this semester, I attended one such event and was very impressed. I admit, at first I was going only for the extra credit offered to me from my Spanish professors in exchange for my attendance at the presentation. It was to be given by author/poet Jimmy Santiago Baca.
Jimmy Santiago Baca is quite a talented individual. He is also equipped with a most interesting past. Baca did not find fame quickly or easily. His life struggles have helped lead him to his passion and talent, poetry. Baca has several successful and wonderful poetry publications. He is a character worth reading into. It was quite a treat to hear his story straight from his lips.
